How To Quickly Improve Your Memory
We rely on our memory function every day. Did you run any errands this week? How did you remember where you had to go, or even the route you took to the destination? There is a universal misconception that the older you get, you are cursed to start forgetting things more and more often. Believe it or not, these myths don’t hold up to reality. So this begs the question, how do you improve your memory? Luckily there are lots of things that you can try that will have a positive effect on your ability to remember, and the efficiency of your memory. The brain can be viewed like a muscle, not unlike the biceps, which can be made stronger. Using your brain more repeatedly and rigorously will exercise it and increase it’s power and reliability.
One of the most challenging aspects of memory improvement is trying to maintain a positive attitude about your abilities. If you believe your memory is deficient, the unfortunate fact is, that you probably will have a difficult time remembering things. First and foremost, trying to keep a positive attitude about your abilities will go a long way in improving your memory. Paying closer attention is yet another huge factor in trying to remember things more effectively. Everyone has experienced meeting a person, then not being able to remember their name after fifteen minutes. You won’t have any chance of remembering the name if you never even hear it in the first place. One trick for remembering the name of a new acquaintance is to restate that person’s name back while meeting them. You should try it, it’s a simple trick that you can start using right away, and find it very effective.
Although not a very glamourous technique, and actually maybe a little boring, using repitition to memorize information is quite effective in learning how to improve your memory. People can still employ this system in remembering easy things now, like a list of places to stop when running errands. “I’m on the sixth level, row Z, spot 35. sixth level, row Z, spot 35, sixth level, row Z, spot 35.” All you have to do is say over and over again the parking space number a few times while stepping inside the shopping center, and again while shopping, then by the time you are ready to go back to the lot, that parking spot location will be committed to your memory.
We’ve only scratched the surface in looking at some tricks that you can use to remember things more easily. Make it a goal to improve one trouble spot where you are having difficulty remembering and put to use one or two of the strategies I’ve talked about here. You will soon be noticing that you are recalling phone numbers, all of the things you needed at the supermarket, and where you parked your car, without much effort at all. It will then be a breeze to move on and continue to exercise and strengthen that “muscle” in your head. The next time someone asks “how do you improve your memory,” you can look like a memory expert and give them some of the fantastic tips I’ve listed here!
